Revalidation — It´s Arrived!

We have written on numerous occasions recently about the arrival of new regulations from the GDC to direct peoples’ Continuing Professional Development in certain key areas.

The 1st January saw the introduction of Statutory Continuing Professional Development in specific key areas. The GDC have continued with their 5-year CPD cycle, the first round of 5-year CPD cycles will come to an end in December 2008. The compulsory core subjects to include in your CPD are:

  1. Medical Emergencies (10 hours per CPD cycle)
  2. Disinfection and Decontamination (5 hours)
  3. Radiography and Radiation Protection (5 hours)

In addition to this there’s a recommendation to dentists treating patients regularly to keep up to date with legal and ethical issues as well handling complaints.

What does this mean?

Well, those who have completed a 5-year cycle, i.e. those relatively new to the register, will need to seek out appropriate courses over the next 5 years in those core subjects and show evidence of attendance of these courses and register them as verifiable CPD along with the rest of your CPD activity.

Don’t forget, it is your responsibility as a registrant of the General Dental Council to obtain and keep documented proof of your participation in any CPD activity. The Deanery is committed to providing core subject training as listed above in the programmes provided by the dental tutors so check the Mersey Deanery web site for these courses to see when they are running in your area.
